The Icelandic people accepted Christianity around the year 1000 and the church has inherited a rich heritage from the generations of Christians in the history of Church and Christianity in this country. Changing demography, urbanisation and secularization are challenges to a church that serves everyone, around the country. The ELCI is committed to working ecumenically, both at local level and internationally and has initiated interfaith cooperation in Iceland.
