Ecumenical Affairs

The ELCI participates in ecumenical work, locally and internationally. The ELCI is a founding member of the Lutheran World Federation (1947), the World Council of Churches (1948), The Nordic Ecumenical Council (1949), theConference of European Churches (1964) and the Porvoo Communion(1995).

Ecumenical committee

The Ecumenical committee is an advisory board for the bishop and the church on Ecumenical Affairs. It has five members, two are elected by the General Synod, two are selected by the bishop of Iceland and one is nominated by the Icelandic Church Aid.

Local Ecumenical work

The ELCI is a member of the Committee for Cooperation of Christian Churches, which is a forum for churches and Christian Associations in Iceland. The committee prepares local initiatives and coordinates the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
Nine churches and Associations are members of the Committee including the Roman Catholic church, the Seventh Day Adventists, Pentecostal churches, the Salvation Army, the Russian Orthodox Church, Lutheran free churches and the ELCI.
