The Icelandic Church Aid

Hjálparstarf kirkjunnar - jólaúthlutun 2008

The Icelandic Church Aid, an NGO with close connection to the church is housed in the Reykjavik parish church of Grensás. Icelandic Church Aid. Icelandic Church Aid was founded in 1970 by the Evangelical Lutheran church of Iceland. At that time it was called the Icelandic Church Relief Foundation but the name was later changed as the new name was considered more descriptive because not only one single institution but rather every church in Iceland takes part in the work.

The role of Icelandic Church Aid is to initiate and coordinate the humanitarian and relief work of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland both locally as well as abroad. From the start Icelandic Church Aid has participated in development work in collaboration with the Lutheran World Federation in various places around the world and it has also provided direct support to societies and organizations in various countries. Icelandic Church Aid is a member of ACT International, Action of Churches Together, a global alliance of churches and related agencies working in emergency relief.

Icelandic Church Aid is a non-profit organization. It is governed by a council of representatives who are constituted by the Church Council, the deaneries in Iceland, and by individual churches that wish to nominate representatives.

Director of the Icelandic Church Aid is Jónas Þórisson, jonas(at)help.is
